Pittman Center is a small mountain town in Sevier County, east of Gatlinburg along U.S. 321. Historically known as Emerts Cove, it sits in a broad valley along the Middle Fork of the Little Pigeon River, and the Greenbrier entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park lies within its town limits.
The quiet side of Gatlinburg
Pittman Center is just minutes from downtown Gatlinburg by way of the East Parkway, yet it feels a world away from the crowds. The town works to preserve its mountain heritage, so the landscape stays rural, green and peaceful.
Greenbrier at your doorstep
Greenbrier is one of the park's less crowded entrances. From here, hikers head to Porters Creek Trail, known for spring wildflowers, and the more demanding hike to Ramsey Cascades. Read more in our guide to the Cosby and Greenbrier entrances.
River and mountain views
The Middle Fork of the Little Pigeon River runs through the valley, and the surrounding ridges frame wide mountain views.
Stroll across the Emerts Cove Covered Bridge, one of the area's historic covered bridges, and visit the historic City Hall. The town also offers fishing, hiking, golf, birdwatching and wildlife viewing. Learn more in our post on covered bridges in the Smokies.
On the way back toward Gatlinburg, U.S. 321 passes the Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community, where local artisans sell pottery, woodwork and more. See our Arts & Crafts Community map and guide.

Pittman Center is rural, so pick up groceries before you head out.
Check fireworks rules
The town requires a permit for fireworks, so skip them unless you've confirmed the rules with the town.
Respect the river
Mountain streams rise quickly after heavy rain, and the rocks are slippery. Supervise children near the water.
Give bears space
Black bears live throughout the Smokies. Keep your distance, never feed them, and keep trash secured.
