The whole town lit up for three and a half months — millions of LED lights across the Parkway, River Road, the bridges, and the trees, running from early November into February.
It started as a modest holiday display in 1989 and grew into one of the defining winter experiences in the Smokies. People come back for it year after year: walking the illuminated Parkway, riding the heated Trolley Ride of Lights, and finding the animated scenes built around Appalachian heritage and Smoky Mountain wildlife.

When it runs
Early November through mid-February — typically launching on the first Thursday of November and running through around February 15. Confirm the current season dates at gatlinburg.com.
That's a longer window than most people realize. The lights are up well past New Year's, and a quiet January evening on the Parkway is a completely different experience from Christmas week.
The lights
Millions of LED lights cover downtown through the season — buildings, lamp posts, bridges, trees, and the streetscape along the Parkway and River Road. The displays mix traditional favorites like dancing snowmen with custom-designed scenes built around Smoky Mountain wildlife and Appalachian heritage.
The whole thing switches on at once at the Winter Magic Kickoff and Chili Cookoff on the first Thursday of November — a single dramatic moment that draws a crowd of its own.
The Winter Magic Lights Tour
A free, self-guided driving or walking tour through the illuminated streets. Plan your route in the Visit Gatlinburg app, which maps every display, or use the printable map at gatlinburg.com.
The Great Smoky Arts & Crafts Community loop east of downtown is decorated too, with its own animated displays — a second, quieter drive away from the Parkway crowds, and worth doing on a separate evening.
The Trolley Ride of Lights
The easiest way to see the lights without walking in the cold or navigating traffic yourself. A guided tour aboard a Gatlinburg Trolley through the full display along the Parkway and River Road.
- Departs from the Mass Transit Center at traffic light 5
- Departures at 6:30, 7:30, and 8:30 PM nightly during operation
- Season — nightly from late November through the end of December, then Saturday nights only in January
- Nights it doesn't run — the first Friday in December (Christmas Parade night), Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day
- Fare — a modest per-person charge; children under 3 on an adult's lap ride free

Snowpeople Scavenger Hunt
Life-size, three-dimensional snowpeople are scattered around downtown through the season. The scavenger hunt challenges you to find them all using the Visit Gatlinburg app and share photos with the event hashtag.
Free, and it turns a walk down the Parkway into an activity — useful with kids who need a reason to keep moving in the cold.

- Winter Magic Kickoff & Chili Cookoff — the season-opening street festival on the first Thursday of November, with the ceremonial lighting of the full display
- Fantasy of Lights Christmas Parade — the signature event, on the first Friday in December
- Festival of Trees — a seasonal exhibition of decorated holiday trees
- New Year's Eve Ball Drop & Fireworks — at the base of the Space Needle on December 31

Tips for visiting
- Weeknights are far calmer. Traffic and parking peak around Thanksgiving, Christmas Parade weekend, Christmas week, and New Year's. A Tuesday in early December is the same lights with a fraction of the crowd
- Book trolley seats ahead. Departures fill, especially at weekends
- Bring the dog. Most outdoor displays are dog-friendly, and well-behaved dogs are welcome on laps aboard the trolley. Note that the Chili Cookoff crowds and occasional fireworks can be a lot for an anxious animal. See our pet-friendly cabins

- Dress properly. Even with the heated trolley option, walking the Parkway means a genuinely cold mountain evening
- January is underrated. The lights are still up, the crowds are gone, and cabin rates outside the holiday weeks are the lowest of the season
