A decades-old tradition that turns downtown Gatlinburg into a glowing procession of lighted floats, giant balloons, marching bands, and Santa Claus — free, and one of the biggest nights of the year here.

It's the signature event of Gatlinburg's Winter Magic Celebration, it steps off at 7:30 PM, and tens of thousands of people line the Parkway for it. The parade is also broadcast nationally around Christmas, so it reaches a considerable audience beyond the people standing in the cold.

The tree lighting

Just before the parade steps off, the city lights the official Gatlinburg Christmas Tree at approximately 7:25 PM on the Parkway Plaza at traffic light 3. It's a good opening act — the tree comes on, the crowd builds, and the parade starts minutes later.

If you want to see it, position yourself near light 3 by 7:20.

VIP grandstand seating

For a guaranteed view, VIP grandstand seating is typically sold each year — bleacher seating at traffic light 3 or near the Gatlinburg Convention Center, with reserved spots and other perks depending on the package.

Children under 5 may sit on a parent's lap without a separate ticket. Strollers generally aren't permitted in the grandstand areas and no stroller parking is provided, which is worth planning around if you're bringing small children.

Tips for attending

• Arrive by mid-afternoon. Between the crowds and the road closures, prime viewing spots go hours before the 7:30 step-off
• Dress for standing outside in December. Layers, blankets, hand warmers. You'll be stationary for a long time in cold mountain air
• Consider the grandstand. It removes the uncertainty of staking out a spot, which matters if you have kids or don't want to arrive at three in the afternoon
• Catch the tree lighting first. Be near traffic light 3 by 7:20
• The Winter Magic lights are already on. The whole downtown display has been lit since early November, so the parade moves through a town that's already glowing
• Download the City of Gatlinburg app. Road closure updates and parade logistics are pushed through it each December

The wider Winter Magic season

The parade is the marquee event of a celebration that runs from early November into early January. It starts with the Winter Magic Kickoff and Chili Cookoff on the first Thursday of November, when more than a million lights come on downtown at once, and those lights stay on every evening through the season.
