NightFlight Expedition at Dollywood — What to Know Before You Ride

Published Sep 27, 2025 NightFlight Expedition at Dollywood — What to Know Before You Ride

NightFlight Expedition opened at Dollywood on August 19, 2026 — the world's first indoor family hybrid coaster and whitewater river raft ride, and the largest single attraction investment in Dollywood's history. Here's what you need to know before you ride.

What Is NightFlight Expedition?

NightFlight Expedition combines four distinct ride experiences into one 5.5-minute journey: a dark ride flight sequence, whitewater river rapids through 500,000 gallons of water, a traditional roller coaster section, and a lake voyage finale — all inside a single 44,000-square-foot temperature-controlled building in Dollywood's Wildwood Grove.

The ride is built on MACK Rides' Rocking Boat system — the first of its kind to be completely enclosed indoors. Ten-person amphibious vehicles travel 1,255 feet of track at speeds up to 29 mph, reaching nearly three stories at peak elevation. The 39-inch minimum height requirement makes it accessible to most of the family, and the Wildwood Grove location positions it alongside Dollywood's other family-focused attractions.

At more than $50 million, NightFlight Expedition is the largest single attraction investment in Dollywood's 40-year history.

The Story

NightFlight Expedition extends Dollywood's Wildwood Grove narrative. Riders join twin scientists Cora and Jasper Oakley — niece and nephew of Ned Oakley, the character whose voice anchors Big Bear Mountain — on a quest to find the legendary Secret Lake, where bioluminescent creatures light the water after dark. The nighttime setting is drawn directly from Dolly Parton's own relationship with the Smoky Mountains.

"Our new ride sends you out into the mountains at night, which is the time that I think they really come to life," Parton said at the announcement. "I have no doubt it's going to be a huge part of Dollywood's next 40 years."

Inside the building it's always night — immersive multimedia projections, lighting effects, and custom audio create the bioluminescent Smokies environment. No phones or recording devices are permitted on the ride itself.

Tips for Riding NightFlight Expedition

Ride early or late. NightFlight Expedition opened August 19, 2026 — it's the newest and most anticipated attraction in the park, which means queues will be long for the remainder of the 2026 season. The shortest waits are typically in the first hour after opening and in the final hour before park close. Mid-morning and mid-afternoon are the busiest windows.

Wildwood Grove is at the back of the park. NightFlight Expedition is in the far corner of Wildwood Grove, reached by hiking uphill through Timber Canyon from the park's main areas. Allow extra time to get there — it's further from the entrance than most Dollywood attractions.

You will get wet. The whitewater rapids section uses 500,000 gallons of water. How wet depends on your vehicle's position and the water level at the time. Plan accordingly if you're heading to other park areas after riding.

It runs in any weather. The 44,000-square-foot indoor facility is temperature-controlled and weather-independent — NightFlight Expedition operates on rainy days, hot summer days, and cold fall days when outdoor rides may be closed or uncomfortable. It's the right destination for a bad-weather park day.

Stay close to the park. Colonial Properties' cabins near Dollywood are 5–10 minutes from the park entrance — which means you can arrive at opening for the shortest NightFlight queue, return to the cabin mid-afternoon when lines peak, and come back in the evening for a second ride. Dollywood allows same-day re-entry. Browse cabins near Dollywood →
