Dollywood Packing List: What to Bring and What to Leave Behind

Dollywood is 168 acres of rides, shows, food, and mountain terrain — and what you bring (or don't bring) makes a real difference in how the day goes. Here's the complete packing list, including a few things that will surprise first-timers.

What to Bring

Comfortable, broken-in shoes. Dollywood is built on hilly terrain — the park climbs from Showstreet at the entrance all the way back to Wildwood Grove, and you'll cover that distance multiple times in a full day. Wear shoes you've already walked miles in, not ones you're breaking in. Sandals are fine only if they have a heel strap; some rides prohibit footwear without one. Leave the flip-flops at the cabin.

Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. The park has tree cover in some areas, but the main midway sections, the ride queues, and the outdoor show venues get full sun for most of the day. Mountain sun is strong even when the air feels cool. Apply before you go in and bring enough to reapply mid-day.

A rain poncho. Fold-up ponchos that compress into a small pouch are worth every penny on a Smoky Mountain summer afternoon. Storms move through quickly, most last 20–30 minutes, and guests with ponchos keep riding while everyone else crowds under canopies. Don't bring an umbrella — they're a hazard in crowds and prohibited on many rides.

Waterproof bags for phones. The water rides — Daredevil Falls, River Rampage, and NightFlight Expedition's whitewater section — will get you wet. Zip-lock bags or a dedicated waterproof phone case cost almost nothing and save a lot of grief. Even if you plan to hold your phone above the splash zone, assume the plan will fail.

A small backpack or fanny pack. Smaller is better. You'll be loading and unloading into ride bins all day, and a large bag slows you down and limits what rides you can board. Unless you need a diaper bag or medical supplies, carry as little as possible. Most rides have storage bins at the boarding area; lockers are available throughout the park for larger items.

Medications and personal medical items. Bring everything you or anyone in your group needs during park hours. The first aid station can provide basic supplies but cannot replace prescription medications. Note any ride height or health restrictions in advance — Dollywood's app lists them for each attraction.

Portable phone charger. The Dollywood app is how you track live wait times, show schedules, and your real-time location in the park. A dead phone mid-afternoon means navigating without your best tool. A small power bank weighs almost nothing and is worth bringing.

Cash-free payment methods. Dollywood's Splash Country is fully cashless in 2026 (cards, Apple Pay, Google Pay only). The main theme park also strongly favors card payment throughout — bring a debit or credit card as your primary payment method. Free Cash to Card kiosks are available if you arrive with cash only.

Your Stay & Play Pass ticket. If you're staying with Colonial Properties, your direct booking includes one complimentary attraction ticket per paid night through the Stay & Play Pass. What to Leave Behind

Outside food and drinks. Dollywood does not permit outside food or beverages inside the park — no coolers, no packed lunches, no drinks from outside. The single exception is one factory-sealed, unopened water bottle per person. If you want to eat outside the park, re-entry is allowed the same day with your ticket or season pass — many guests keep a cooler in the car and take a mid-day break in the parking lot during the hottest part of the afternoon, then return for the evening shows.

Alcohol. Alcoholic beverages are not permitted on Dollywood property — neither brought in nor served inside. This includes the theme park and Splash Country. (The resort hotels — DreamMore and HeartSong Lodge — operate separately and do serve alcohol.)

Weapons of any kind. Park security scans guests on entry. Pocketknives, multi-tools, and anything else that could be classified as a weapon will be confiscated. Do a pocket-check before you leave the cabin — it's easy to forget what's in your bag from a previous day.

A Dolly Parton costume. This is real park policy, not a joke. Dollywood prohibits guests from dressing as Dolly Parton. The rule exists for obvious reasons — the park couldn't function if crowds couldn't distinguish the actual Dolly from an impersonator.

Large bags if you can help it. Full-size backpacks, rolling luggage, and oversized bags slow down boarding and may not fit in ride storage bins. Pack light. What you're not carrying is as valuable as what you are.

An umbrella. Crowds, rides, and wind all make umbrellas impractical and sometimes dangerous. The poncho is the correct tool for Dollywood rain.
