Big Rock Dude Ranch

Big Rock Dude Ranch at Ponderosa is a family ranch tucked into a peaceful valley in Pigeon Forge, about two miles off the main strip. It's known for guided trail rides that climb into the Smoky Mountain foothills.

Beyond the horses, there's a free petting zoo, gem mining, a stocked fishing pond, a playground and shaded picnic grounds, so the whole family can make a morning or afternoon of it. And it's only about five minutes from Dollywood.

Mountain trail rides at Big Rock Dude Ranch

The trail rides are the main event. Instead of flat loops around a field, the rides head up into the mountains on trails the ranch maintains every day. Along the way, you'll ride past creeks and through wooded paths, with mountain views as you climb. Keep your eyes open for wildlife, too.

Guided and beginner-friendly

Every ride is led by an experienced trail guide and stays at a steady walk the whole way. You don't need any riding experience. The staff will match you with the right horse and go over the basics before you head out. Nervous riders can ask for a calm horse and a spot right behind the guide. Rides last about an hour.

Free petting zoo

Meet ponies, llamas, alpacas, goats, emus, peacocks and plenty of other friendly animals. The petting zoo is free and a big hit with little ones who aren't old enough to ride.

Gem mining

Sift through the dirt for amethyst, pyrite, citrine and turquoise. Kids love finding sparkly treasures in their pans.

Stocked fishing pond

Cast a line for bass, bluegill, crappie and catfish. No fishing license is needed, and the ranch provides poles and bait.

Picnics, playground and general store

Bring lunch to the free picnic area with horseshoe pits, let the kids loose on the playground, and browse the ranch's museum, gift shop and general store for souvenirs, drinks and snacks.

Plan your visit

No reservations needed: Rides are first come, first served. Arrive early to avoid a wait, and plan to sign a waiver and watch a short safety video before you ride.

No admission charge: You only pay for the activities you choose. The ranch also posts online specials and coupons.

Open year-round: The ranch is open seven days a week, but cold or wet weather and holidays can change the schedule. Call ahead before you go.

Know the rider rules: Riders must be at least 5 years old, and every rider needs their own horse. The ranch also has weight and height guidelines for safety, so call ahead if you have questions.

Dress for the trail: Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes or sturdy sneakers, and layer up for the weather. Helmets are available on request. Phones and other handheld devices aren't allowed on the trail.
